Exodus 20: The First Command

May 3, 2020 | Exodus, Messages, Sermon Videos

You can turn your Bibles with me to Deuteronomy chapter 5, you may or may not know the connection that Deuteronomy and Exodus have together. Exodus is the narrative of the events that occurred.

And then you have Leviticus and Numbers which Leviticus is about the priesthood. Mainly, there are other commands as well and numbers is primarily there’s some stories in there, but it’s primarily accounting. The tribes to see what multitude God really did make of the children of Abraham. Deuteronomy is the last book of the Torah, and it is a book that if you put it next to Exodus is very similar and there’s a reason for that. Deuteronomy is actually a retelling of the 10 commandments, and then some of the, in Exodus 32, specifically with a golden calf the Israelites worshipping the idols there and then they’re after, when the 10 Commandments were re-given and some other laws.

Deuteronomy is Moses preaching a sermon. It’s the entire thing is one big sermon and it’s the account of it.

So you think I preach long? This would have been an hour’s hours. long sermon, maybe more.

So we’re gonna read the Deuteronomy account of the giving of the 10 Commandments partially because of how he summarizes it at the end. And then we’ll go to Exodus our main passage and we’ll begin with our sermon this is Deuteronomy Chapter 5, we’ll start in verse 1, we’ll go through Verse 21, then we’ll read a handful of verses in chapter 6, as well.

[Deuteronomy 5:1-21 ESV] 1 And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them. 2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. 3 Not with our fathers did the LORD make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today. 4 The LORD spoke with you face to face at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, 5 while I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the LORD. For you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up into the mountain. He said: 6 “‘I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 7 “‘You shall have no other gods before me. 8 “‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 9 You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. 11 “‘You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. 12 “‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. 16 “‘Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. 17 “‘You shall not murder. 18 “‘And you shall not commit adultery. 19 “‘And you shall not steal. 20 “‘And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 21 “‘And you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’

And now we read the verses that are probably the most read and quoted verses in history. You might not be familiar with them, but these reverses that were read daily by Jews for millennia.

[Deuteronomy 6:4-9 ESV] 4 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

First three versus God spoke all these words saying, “I am the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me, Let’s pray:

Father, I ask you this morning to give us a great deal of clarity and understanding in your work, I pray that your word would become life to us and a help to us. Like the Psalmist talks that it would revive our souls, the law as we read it would make us wise that they would be more precious than silver, or gold to us.

Pray that you would help us to understand the concepts and the story and help us to understand this command, and I pray that you would call your people here today into greater obedience and love for you.

And for those who aren’t believers, today, I pray that they would hear this command and turn from their gods and turn to you. Lord, he asked this in your precious name they met.

I have two concerns. As I begin this sermon first, I’m concerned that some of you may not recognize that there are other gods in this room right now.

Second, I’m concerned that many of you throw out the first two-thirds of your Bible, and especially the law because in your mind, that’s how the Jews were saved, but were saved by grace today.

Or because, in your mind, all that that’s there for is to show us how bad we are, and I already know that, so I already know that I need the gospel.

Now both of those things in one sense are true in one sense, the Jews by their faith would then obey the commandments, and it was in that they could have a relationship with God and really it’s no different than us today by our faith we trust Christ alone. For salvation, but it’s in the act of faith where we obey an act on our faith that we prove our faith to be genuine because faith without works is dead.

And in one sense, the law was given to us, to show us that we fail to meet up to show us that because of a flaw, that is within us that law could never produce the salvation that we need, ’cause we will always come to that law, and always will take that law and twist it and turn it and then failed to meet up to it by ourselves. The law is not helpful, but I’m worried that if you have that mindset, only you will fail to reach the richest, the treasures that are in this law, you won’t see the law the way David did, when he said In the longest chapter in the Bible which the entire thing is a celebration of the law.

So, 1-19, he says The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

He says this in another verse. If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. He said, “I will never forget your precepts. That’s another word for law, for variety. He says, “For by them, you have given me is like, he says, “Oh how I love your law, it is my meditation day and night. How often have you meditated on the ice, Goring people that will find in Chapter 21, he says, “I long for your salvation. Oh Lord, your law is my delight let my soul live and praise you let your rules help me. We just don’t have this often times category in our mind for the commands of God in the Old Testament, scripture where they are good and they’re, therefore, are good.

So the first command in the 10 Commandments, “You shall have no other what Gods before me.

The second command is gonna elaborate on that we’ll get there. But when Moses decides every single law that you see has a positive principle there are many negative laws. You shall not do what you shot not murder, you should not commit adultery, but there’s a positive principle behind that, right?

If it’s you shall not steal the positive principle is You shall respect somebody else’s property if it’s “You shall not murder. The positive principle is You shall respect the image of God in man and when you start to realize that positive principle, it’s very easy to see how Jesus states the principle of the law in Matthew 5, because if you hate your brother, in your heart you’re not respecting the image of God in man because if you hate your brother, in your heart and you call him You fool… You’re not respecting image of God and man you might be abiding by the letter, but not the principle, and many times in the Bible sometimes anyway, there’s a negative statement made. Don’t do this, and a positive statement not too far away to explain together, what the principle is. And the positive statement was, what we’ve read in Deuteronomy Chapter. 6, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind, these are the words that Jesus says is the summary of the law, and to love your neighborhood yourself. He adds that on.

Okay, so what does it mean to have no other gods before me, positively, it means love God with everything. What is love?

And some of you just started up in your head a little bit. No love in the Bible. How do we define it?

For Samuel 2017, Jonathan made a covenant made a covenant with David, by his love for Him, for He loved him as he loved his own soul. It’s a affection that desires, the good for David first King’s three. And then first king is a love and I love this goes first. Kings 3 starts a portion of Solomon’s life that’s really good and First Kings 11, ends that and starts the portion that’s really bad and both have to do with Solomon’s love.

Solomon loved the Lord, same word, walking in the statues of David his father on he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places. And then it says in 1 Kings 11, now Solomon loved many foreign women, the narrative changes Song of Solomon, a story of longing for the woman longing to be with her beloved, she says “I will now rise and go about the city and the streets and then the squares, I will seek Him who my soul loves. I saw him, but found him not. That’s the same word that’s used here. In other words, you cannot reduce love to be just about rote obedience.

There’s passions that are involved with it. It’s emotional as well.

It is a, a, a thing that’s hard to define, but let me try.

Love is so affectionate, intentions concern for someone else’s benefit our best affectionate concern for somebody else’s benefit or best when it comes to affection, a concern for God. We can’t make him better off, but we can give him glories. So, it’s a love, it’s an affection that’s concerned and look at the elements that are involved here. Is this the same love that you might have for your dog? Is it on the same level as the type of love, you might even have with your spouse?

He says, “No you’re gonna love the Lord your God. With all your heart, soul, and might Heart is a word that it’s not just emotions, in the Bible, often it has to do with everything that’s inside the inner person, the the thinking, the will and the emotions love Him with all of that. So, refers to your being or your life essence everything you are, your energy. And my test is, could literally probably be translated much-ness. And I love that word, love God with all your much-ness. Do you love God like that?

So here’s your big idea today, give your loyalty and love to God alone.

You shall have no other gods before him. question we’ll ask for participation. If you’re online, you can blue clue shout it out.

Were their other gods to the… To how many of you say, yes, I mean if you say No, how many of you are undecided were there are other gods pick a side yes or no, everybody at the same time, were there other gods?

I should divide you up and have you guys Duke, this out.Yes is the answer, but we have to define what God means the right way.

Yeah, it isn’t your question the word used is Elohim, the… I am at the end of Elohim, it plural.

Hello, he makes it plural, but plural in Hebrew, can be a way to speak of somebody of an honored position.

You could say There are many dates you’re the dates of all the dates. So you could say that about my dad, and it would have this idea of honor. It doesn’t have to mean plural, a number, it can be a way to express honor to someone.

So sometimes when the word Elohim is used in the Bible, it’s referring to God and we know that because in many different passages it straight up says the Lord is one. Yale is one, he is one Elohim but he’s one of majesty and power.

But there are other times when that same exact word, same exact form is used and it’s the plural.

Got the word itself primarily refers to a being that a spiritual in nature, or English were God, especially with a capital G, if you write it out, always includes the idea because we have all grown up “monotheis and probably every most everyone in America has grown up model the US.

So it always includes the idea whether you’re a Jew, a Muslim, a Christian or not even really a Christian, but kind of grew up a Christian you all believe that God means the one who made all things, the Hebrew word for God, is a kind of being a spiritual being, but the Bible makes the radical claim, and it is radical. When this came out, these words were written the Bible makes the radical claim that there is only one he turned all powerful holy wise, and good spiritual being named Yale that made all the other spiritual beings, and all the physical universe. Now, you could call those other spiritual being gods. It’s okay to do that, but there’s only one true creator, God as we use that word in English.

Almost met.

Just to prove it to you real quick is a word that can refer to not just God.

For instance, they refers to Samuel spirit in First Samuel 28, when Saul goes to the witch says “Hey can you call up Sam. Il-spirit? And it says that he saw a God coming out of the earth, an Elohim. A spiritual being, coming out of the earth, it refers to the angel of the Lord, they refers to angels in Sal made 2, it refers to the other nations gods and Judges 11. will you not possess what key mash your God gives you to possess?

And it refers to demons in Deuteronomy 32, at the clothes of Moses, a famous sermon the Israelites stirred him to jealousy with strange gods with a combination that they provoked him to anger, they sacrifice to demons, that were no gods they weren’t the Lord, they weren’t Yale to gods they had never known to new gods that had come recently. Who your fathers had never dreaded there were other gods in one sense of the word, all uses a lot of different labels for these in Second Corinthians 4, 4, he called Satan, God they use in Greek.

In this case, the God of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers to keep them from seeing the light of the glory of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

He calls him the prince of the power of the air, in Ephesians 2-2. and when you once walking according to the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience, he calls them angels. Or a better… A good translation for that might be messengers 2 Corinthians 11, 14, no wonder for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light and angel of light, and then He calls them these four categories that have to do with common thinking of the time rulers, authorities and some of your translations, but have principalities and powers, powers and spiritual forces, whatever you have.

This is Ephesians 6, Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil For… “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against rulers against authorities against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

So when I say that I’m concerned that some of you may not recognize that there are gods, in this room right now.

Help you understand what I’m saying.

What is the biblical story about these? And I think if that was all…

I think I might be able to help you a little bit, but I think if you get the narrative to this point and after this point about the gods and what their places in the narrative of the Bible, it’s gonna help you tremendously so God makes all things a Shasta Chapter 1 Verse 16, really clearly states that God through Jesus Christ by Him all things were created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, where the thrones, or dominions, or rulers, or authorities, those are the ones we just mentioned. All things were created through him and for him, so God made all these things. They are not competitors to the true God-ness of God, but they are spiritual beings, and they’re powerful spiritual beings man, sins at the temptation of one of these powerful spiritual beings in the garden.

The temptation depending on your translation, was that Adam and Eve would be like God, or the gods. “lohner is actually a good scholarly debate about which one it is, but either way, it has to do with them wanting me to reject the position that God had for them and to embrace a status of pride that God had not given them it’s a sin of pride, that’s a sin of discontentment with God’s creation and God’s law, so these powerful beings, then after mankind sins and falls into sin, they fall into sin, as well. In the aftermath, we don’t know everything that goes on, but as the human race, expands humanity becomes so wicked and this is partially we understand as a result of these evil spiritual powers that the mankind is always violent, they are always fleshly and they are without anything that’s holding them back. It is absolute anarchy, so God judges the world through a flood and save a select few.

And after I now, his family, growing and multiplying and it’s a big number of people, they all gather together and they decide they’re going to build the tower of Babylon, the Tower of Babylon, and don’t be confused. This is not a sky scraper this is a spiritual edifice it’s spiritual being, it’s like a temple.

They are building this probably to become like the gods, they wanna get a high enough to be like, The Gods, and God looks down from heaven, and he says that these people are never gonna get it. I’ll confuse their languages and their languages are confused and they divide off at that point according to their languages into 70 nations.

We know that from the first 11 chapters of Genesis, it is a crazy account, but it gives us a theological record of the nations. It answers the questions of how should we value other people groups and I mean this stuff is still going on, today, right?

Darwinism, if you think that some of you evolved from one place and other humans evolved from another place, you have every right to look at them, and try to evaluate whether or not you’re better or superior and being to them.

And this is what led to some of the greatest Travis ties of the 20th century.

But that’s not what the biblical count is. The Biblical account, is that we are all the same race. The Biblical account tells us why these nations have all these different languages and not one language, if we’re all humans, the Biblical account tells us why these nations are serving many gods. If there’s only one God who made all things that doesn’t make sense, seems like that would be passed down through Adam, and Eve in the line why? But they start worshiping many gods. What where did that come from?

And by the way, that was the commonly held view for millennia, many gods.

So, reflecting on all of this, Moses tells us at the end of this sermon in Deuteronomy 32 that He God actually in the dividing up at the Tower of Babel, he actually gave the nations over at that moment, to these other Gods to these powerful spiritual beings, these wicked spiritual beans.

It says in Deuteronomy 32, when the Most High gave to the nations, their inheritance in other words, the land, he divided mankind and fix the borders of the peoples according to the numbers of the sons of God.

You have little hints of this throughout the scriptures that have then right after that part is that the Lord in Genesis Chapter 12 reserves, one family, a week family, not a powerful family and a family that did not have a land they weren’t many and the patriarch of the family could not have kids with his wife.

So it looked like the line was gonna die off and the Lord’s portion the Lord decided that he would give to the God’s the nations, but that his people would be Abraham, and his offspring and so he comes to Abraham in Genesis Chapter 12, and he tells Abraham.

I will make of you a great nation, even though you don’t have any kids and it doesn’t look like you’ll have any kids and it looks like your line is gonna die with you.

Now I’m gonna make a vow a great nation and I will bless you and I will make your name great, and don’t miss this part.

What is the purpose of the blessing to Abraham, so that you will be a blessing?

I will bless those who bless you, and him who desires you IL curse and in you, all the families of the Earth will be blessed, so God has an intention, he gives the nations over to these demons, he reserves one, the smallest of them, all for himself, but it’s through that one that he’s gonna bring blessing and bring all of the nations back to himself. So we skip over the rest of Genesis. We skip over the early part of Exodus and the nation is big and they’re at…

Hi, I and God calls them in Exodus 19. my treasured possession, as the idea of a dignitary among all the people for the Earth is mine, you will be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation, refers to your standing in the world, to bless the world.

Deuteronomy four, he says, “If you keep these and do them for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, the nations who when they hear these statutes will say Surely, this nation is a wise and understanding people for what great nation is there that has a God, so near to it, as the Lord our God is to us whenever we call upon Him, and what great nation is there that His statutes, and rules are so righteous as all this law that I set before you today.

When I say I thought about the law and thought about what was coming, He said, it shall come to pass in the later day that the house of the Lord, the mount of the house, the Lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains shall be lifted… Up above the hills and the nations will flow up hill like water a hill do it to receive the law.

The tent was that Israel would be a blessing to the nations. Psalm 22 at the ends of the earth, all the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord and all the families of the nation shall worship before you. So I’m 46, “Be still and know that I am the Lord. But what comes right after this, why are we still… I know that He’s the Lord, because He will be exalted among the nations and exalted in the earth through Israel’s loyalty to God. The nations would see how special Yahweh is he’s different than these gods that they worship, they would see that He’s the Creator God, but He is high and holy above all other spiritual beings that He alone is sovereign through Israel. Loyalty. The nations would be attracted to Yahweh. They didn’t do good, they weren’t loyal they failed and the nations were not blessed.

So he calls Israel his son many times, including all the way through Isaiah. So He sent His Son, the second person of the Trinity, to bring the blessing to the nations, that he planned.

So in summary, God gave the nations to these evil spars evil powerful spiritual beings, the nations that worship the nations worshiped these spiritual beings, and Paul, even says this in 1 Corinthians 10, “I imply that what pagan sacrifice, they offered a demons and not to God Abraham’s family then is reserved for the true God and that that all of that is the reason why the first command to Abraham’s family, is you will not have any other gods.

Your mind, “I’m your God, you’re not gonna worship other gods, Jesus is born into this narrative into this biblical framework.

“Isaiah saw the goal of redemption was not just for Israel when Israel was in captivity.

I say you, right? It’s too light of things that you…

Jesus is coming. One would be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jake up and to bring back the preserve of Israel. It’s too small a thing.

No, I will make you a light for the nations that my salvation may reach to the end of the year, Jesus replaces Israel as the Royal priest who brings blessings to the nations. Galatians 3, 16. now, the promises were made to Abraham and to His offspring.

It does not say to offspring, as if all the Israelites referring to many, but referring to one to your offspring, Jesus alone, the one who is Christ, the cross when he dies on the cross is Jesus victory pray parade were the blessings flow out to the nations, and he starts to encroach on the enemy’s lines Colossians 2, 15 says, Jesus disarmed the rulers and the authorities, and put them to open shame by triumphing over them in it, in the cross, it’s there, he’s in throne.

It’s there here is the right to open the scroll.

It’s their hearings, the right to have authority, on art, it’s there ‘worthy is the lamb to open the school. Because he was slain it’s there, he defeated sin, it’s there, He took the condemnation we deserved, it’s there he earned the right for you and I to be called children of God, do nothing, we offer, but only through Jesus Christ, Jesus kept the commands. As part of a life of obedience that culminated in the cross and that can release you from the rule of those evil spiritual powers, and that can set you apart to serve the true and living God of the universe.

Jesus, today, is encroaching on enemy to ring, he is reclaiming the nations back to himself one day, every knee will and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Yale when Jesus completed his mission, before he left to heaven. Why does he say that all authority has been given to him under heaven, why I… Because he is reclaiming the nation, these spiritual powers no longer have authority over the nations Jesus does and so he says, “All authority in Heaven and on Earth has been given to me, Go therefore and make disciples of the baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all of that. I have commanded you, behold, I’m with you always to the end of the age and when Paul talks about the salvation of the Corinthians, the Thessalonians and the Ephesians, he tells them that God saved them from powerful spiritual forces from the gods, so that they would serve the true God alone process. Onions, one in, they themselves report concerning to us. What kind of reception we had among you, how you turn the God from idols to serve the living and true God, Ephesians 2-2 you with you in which you once walked in those sins following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air.

No longer a… You see why he says You shall have no other gods before me. First, to run through some applications.

Number one, I wanna ask you a question, “Is God right now, breaking you from a trance is he breaking you from your other gods that you serve, and worship from a fake idea of who God is from powerful spiritual forces that are keeping your loyalty.

Is he breaking you right now from the things that you have lived your life for, from what you’ve loved, and I’m curious, is the gospel of Jesus Christ, driving your darkness away and opening your eyes, the Bible says To love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul. And with all your mind is that you are… You hollow this empty of love for him just going through the motions time to turn the time to repent, time to ask forgiveness, God can fill you with the Spirit and enrich you so that you can live the way you’re called but you have to come to him, you have to ask forgiveness, took it. I mean it’s pretty straight forward. This application we need this kind of biblical theological ground work if we are going to have any endurance to the mission God has called us to… We need to see what God is doing, we need to see what we’re up against.

I think sometimes we think we’re up against good arguments, I think sometimes we think we’re up against, trying to catch somebody on a good day. I think sometimes we think we are wrestling against social constructs for whatever reason, they’re not hearing when we tell them No, we don’t wrestle “against flesh and blood.

You need this kind of biblical theological groundwork to understand the miracle that you embark on when you share the gospel, God is reaching away. People who are enslaved in worship to gods that are not god, reaching him away pulling them to himself and he’s doing that through the clear proclamation of the Gospel through you and your love for them as you share the Gospel and what matters about who God is, who Jesus is we need to see that God is on mission to free captives who are willing… Captives from their captivity, he is doing this all over the world, and he is doing this in Norwalk.

God may be willing or maybe calling.

You’d go over seas where 99% of the people are enslaved are deeply devoted to other gods whatever they may be, they can either name, or they can just live for ideas like sex and money, but either way they’re Gods will learn more about that next week, you may be called to go do that. Praise God, how can we help to to talk to me, God may be calling you on a mission to entertain, today to the enemy terrain in your backyard, today, and if he’s not doing those two things, he’s definitely calling you to be the support team to those who are going.

God, we are disciples who are encroaching on the world and I know might not feel this way. Sometimes we get this wrong. I cut out a whole section in here ’cause I wanna be clear. Although America is built on wonderful biblical principles America is not God’s nation there’s only ever been one nation that’s God’s theologically Israel that means that you are in enemy terrain today, even if there are good biblical principles that guard against evil, that we get to live and work freely God has done those things that’s wonderful that does not mean we’re in God’s country today.

You are on enemy terrain and you have to prepare for battle.

I’m not talking about battle with your fist. Look about battle on your knees praying, talking about Battle by speaking to people and loving them and caring for them. Are you willing to do those things?

Third, I challenge you to lay down your love for other things do not love the things of this world, Do not love the world, or the things in this world, if anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

They’re exclusive.

You get that there’s not room for both in your soul, I can either love God section it concern for his glory, and if you don’t have that, it doesn’t speak well of where you’re at spiritually, you can either love God or you can love the things of this world money… Well, hobbies, comforts leisure whatever, it’s one or the other.

You can’t have both.

They’re exclusive. We’re gonna learn more about that next week.

Fourth application. I want you to see how he prefaces these commands, verse 2, “I’m the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me, you’ll never keep the command here without remembering verse to and that’s what amazingly got he commands, but he upholds their obedience with His promises and that’s what he does here, he says First, I am the Lord, meditate on that for just a second. Who has God revealed Himself to be as the Lord, so far in the first 70 chapters of the Bible, is a creator, a he’s holding righteous, he’s a good God who is faithful to His promises.

Yes, and sovereign over all things, what God intended for or what you intended Fred intended for good, meditate on who he is, and then second meditate on who he is, and this is gonna sound as guy, but it’s right there in the text to you don’t get to decide who he is to you, but look at what it says. I am the Lord, your A, this isn’t just about a God that’s out there and distant from us that we have to serve.

This is a personal God who has got then to you, he is holding us righteous, He’s loving, He’s sacrifices son for your good, he’s wise and he’s brought your life and order it and sovereignty to bring you to Himself, that’s amazing. Look at what God has done in your life to this point, and finally look at it. Who brought you up out of the land of Egypt, God’s great deliverance of salvation, this bringing out of the land of each it becomes this amazing type of God’s deliverance for us from our sins.

If you’re gonna obey you have to be supported by God’s promises by who he is, but what he’s done for you, and it’s out of that, that you’re able to obey so you have to stop and meditate. So I’ll tell you what, if you meditate on who God is, you meditate on what God’s done for you, you meditate on His salvation, the things of earth grow strangely dim in the light of His glory, and grace, right everything else these other gods that would grab your attention and grab your loyalty, the things that demand your loyalty day-by-day that you know compete with your love for God, those things grow strangely dim as you turn your eyes on Jesus, you see, who God is and who he’s revealed himself to be what he’s done for you, the salvation that he’s worked for you.

These guys go strange, the He is…

I’ve made my call to you if you’re an unbeliever, today, Listen if these words have stirred nothing in your heart today, what I challenge you to repent if these boards have stirred something in your heart, and respond, don’t fool yourself into thinking that everything is good with you? spiritually.

God commands us to love Him with everything that’s not true of you right now you need to repent and turn to him, you have to a tired of half-hearted Christianity.

I’m tired of drifting myself in the past of Christianity, I think God is weird with it as well. Do you want to be part of a church that pushes you into deeper and deeper into loyalty, and love for God that makes no allowance for your excuses, do you want to love God with all your heart? Do you want to be part of church that pushes you to that who you want notes you forward a…

I’d rather be near a small camp fire where the coals are red hot, the near dying bonfire, where the coals are barely warm.

Are you willing to be passionately pursuing Jesus Christ and loving God with all your heart, redeemer is not a place in de-know true Bible believing church is a place for half heart of Christianity.

It’s not a place for it.

Now, if you are sensitive today and you wonder, do I measure up to… I do enough?

What I’m saying right now is not for you, let this inspire you.

None of us will be perfect redeemer is not a place for perfection, but it is a place where we will encourage one another for greater and greater devotion to Christ and to His mission. If you are not perfect and you see how you fail to meet up, but you hunger for more righteousness, the redeemer is a place for you. What I’m saying no, strike that what the word of God is saying, is that if you are not devoted to God alone in your life and loving him passionately than you are a little Luke-warm Christian, that kind of got that kind of Christian is the kind that God is disgusted with and maybe you’re not Christian at all, if these words make you angry, or you’re coming up with excuses in your mind about why you don’t have to obey or why I’m wrong or you’re blaming me for something, then I challenge you to repent and receive God’s good grace, ’cause he can help you to love Him with all your heart.

We will see in the next command next week that if this is not you that if you are one who… Nothing of what I’m said you’re willing to respond to, then you’ve simply created a God that fits your desires and the way you want to live your life, and you’ve broken the second command and you’re not worshipping Jesus.

So I called you, and I know it’s heavy-handed, I call to you, is you have to realize the problem then you can repent, and receive just abundant overflowing grace but you have to start somewhere, why not today, why not today?

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, have no other gods before him.

Let’s close with the word, pray. Father, would you please be at work, and your people here today, don’t keep up on a needless skill, but where there should be guilt and shame I pray that you would have your heavy hand weighing on them, and don’t take it off of them, so they turn to you, Father, I pray that you would help each one of us to love You and stir. We’re not gonna be perfect we’re not gonna do this right, but we have to be trying, we have to be going, we have to be facing the right direction and pursuing it aggressively and I pray that you would help us together to be unified to do that.

We thank You for Jesus Christ, who perfectly fulfilled all of the commands to give us the right to be called children of God. I pray that if there are people here who don’t believe that they would turn from their sins, turn from their gods and turn to You and Father, I inflame your people here today with a great love for you pray that we would be able to warm each other, become red hot as a church in our fire and love for you father praying ask these things in your precious name an act the.
